Cooking area:
In this area the kitchen would have a
brick hearth and a superior cooker than the farmhouse kitchen.
Wentworth’s traditional hood or ascot hood lends itself to this
particular look. Bringing the base cabinets away from the wall
and using angle base cabinets to bring back the base to the
normal depth works well here also.
-
Sink area: This
are now has the opportunity to use cabinets that look more like
furniture. Some examples of this are an arched pelmet with
recessed lattice doors, a star cutout in the doors and columns.
The use of columns allows for a recessed toe kick to make it
comfortable to stand at.
-
Plate racks: In a
formal country kitchen the plate rack is still functional,
however it was also used to display plates and other china. The
plate rack can also be designed in line with other cabinets
while reducing its depth to allow it to stand out and cause a
break in the cornice.
-
Base furniture:
With an improved amount of space base cabinets are still
functional while having the freedom for a few different items.
Some new items found are the Victorian base (a unit with three
top drawers two drawers below and one long drawer on the
bottom), an open base unit with wicker baskets or an extra
drawer in a normal base cabinet. The use of columns and pulling
out base cabinets in the cooking and sink area along with an
open shelf cabinet, pasta drawers and our bread drawer cabinet
give the kitchen that formal country look. Your Wentworth
kitchen will be created to be your own personal signature.
-
Upper furniture:
It is important to know that in the formal country look upper
cabinets are never staggered in height, but rather the cornice
remained level excepting certain areas such as the hearth, which
could be higher and deeper. Upper cabinets can change in depth,
which creates an interesting run of cornice. It is also
suitable to drop or stagger cabinets by using either a dresser
unit to set on top of the counter or a plate rack to run below
normal upper furniture. It is recommended to have a balance of
glazed doors and open cabinets to create a genuine and authentic
feel. Cladding the backsplash and then adding a shelf also
creates this effect. Theses items bridge the gap between merely
having a kitchen and having country furniture.
-
Mouldings: The
prominent moulding for this type of kitchen would be furniture
base, or skirting, in most areas. However a recessed toe is
still possible in desired work areas. Cornice moulding can be
built up along with a sub rail moulding and a dentil moulding
can run along it. Your authorized Wentworth kitchen designer are
many ways to use a few simple mouldings to achieve a formal
country look.
