American Basswo00od
Also known by the names American linden, basswood, lime,
linden, American white wood, it is a beautiful tree reaching
hights of 130ft and a girth of 4 feet. Its dense foliage
and fast growth makes it a familiar street tree offering
shade and beautification. In Spring it has white to cream
colored flowers and thrives best in rich sandy soil.
THE
TIMBER
The heartwood is a creamy white to brownish with
a fine and uniform texture and a straight grain
that does not split easily. An easy to work species
demanding sharp tools. Is easily glued and cut
with carving tools and takes enamel well.
USES
This timber is prefered when the desired result is natural.
It has a clean attractive appearance and is because it is
free from odor and has a clean attractive look it is good
for food storage. Much of it is manufactured into veneer
and as a core material for panels. Its also popular amongst
hobbyists who use basswood for ship models and airplanes.
