FAGUS
GRANDIFOLIA
American Beech
Also known as red beech, white beech, stone beech, winter beech
the tree is a feature of the Ohio-Mississippi River valleys and
the lush slopes of the Appalachians. The tree can reach a height
of 100ft with a diameter up to 50 inches. It is noted for its
blue grey smooth bark and can be found from New Brunswick in
the north to places like Florida, Texas and Oklahoma.
THE
TIMBER
The American beech has a dark to light reddish
brown heartwood with tiny growth rings. This makes
it a uniform wood that is very strong and heavy.
This makes for interesting quartersawn textures.
USES
The wood has a variety of uses and is particularly good for
food containers, baskets and butcher blocks. Its use ranges
from chairs, flooring, woodenware, handles, novelties, turnery.
It also wears well with liquid and preserves well.
WENTWORTH FURNITURE SAYS:
Great wood for furniture, light grain pattern for a more
