Bald cypress
In the USA the southern-cypress, swamp cypress, re cypress, gulf
cypress and yellow cypress are all derivations of this tree family.
Its range is from Delaware to Florida and along the gulf coast
to Texas. Inland it grows along streams and coastal plains into
Illinois, Missouri and Indiana. It is the state tree of Louisiana.
THE
TIMBER
This tree is a large deciduous conifer which grows on
swampy areas, stream banks and along rivers. Conical
when young, it tends to flatten with age (many have been
found to be up to 600 years old) it can grown to 120
feet with a diameter of up to 5ft. The sapwood is pale
yellowish white merging into yellowish to light brown
heartwood. The wood has a greasy feel but does not impart
taste or odor to food, and the grain is even and coarse
textured.
USES
This is a wood of outstanding durability and is an ideal
wood to machine and shape. It glues, sands and nails well
and takes paint particularly well. It is ideal for everything
from docks and bridges to doors, paneling and siding..
