PINUS
STROBUS
Northern White Pine
The
pine family - a northern hemisphere family of trees
and shrubs - has nine different genera and over
200 species. The northern white is sometimes called the
eastern white, Weymouth pine, cork pine, pumpkin pine
or pine blanc. It
ranges from the Great Plains across to the Atlantic seaboard
and from eastern Canada down to Guatemala. It is the
largest of the species.
THE
TIMBER
Northern white pine is the softest and lightest
of all the pines. Lumberjacks named it cork
pine because the logs float high in the water on
the way to sawmills. It can be distinguished from
the
yellow, harder pines by its lighter, creamy color
and its less prominent annual rings. The transition
from earlywood to latewood is gradual, with the
latewood much narrower and less dense.
USES
The soft, uniform texture is very easy to work - It planes
well, glues easily and is a stable wood to use. Its figure
remains soft and mellow even under darker treatments and
will hold fairly sharp carving details. It is used for sashes,
panel doors, interior trim and paneling, cabinetry, furniture
and patternmaking. Historically it was common to use in masts
for wooden war ships.
WENTWORTH FURNITURE SAYS:
There is nothing like pine - the secret is in the finishing.
